Ijaw women warn FG against neglect

Ijaw women in Arogbo in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State have warned the Federal Government against the continued neglect of the Ijawland.

Ijaw women in Arogbo in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State have warned the Federal Government against the continued neglect of the Ijawland.

The women gave the warning in Arogbo, Ondo State on Saturday during the inauguration of a group, Arogbo Ijaw-Ibe Women Development Initiative .

The Coordinator of the AWDI, Ms Ebiere Gold-Eke, in her speech said that the nation had undermined the development of Ijawland since independence and the group is saying "enough is enough of this neglect."

Gold-Eke said, "Arogbo women need rapid development of their society and the development of the Ijaw nation at large."

She stressed that the Ijaw land deserved a better treatment considering the roles it played in the economic development of the nation.

"Henceforth, we are saying a big no to political deceit, total relegation and absolute marginalization of the Ijaw nation. We will continue to demand for our rights irrespective of which political party is in power."

She added that the oppressive policies of the Nigerian nation against her people would not stop them from demanding for what rightly belonged to them.

According to her, "It gives me a serious concern to see our mothers and daughters being deprived of basic social amenities that should be taken for granted. The neglect is due to the fact that we have not been speaking against it but we are now set to correct that," she said.

Meanwhile, an NGO, the National Problems and Solutions has disputed the census figure for Lagos and Kano states.

The National coordinator of the organisation, Dr. Wale Omole on Friday, called for a body of international organisations to assist the country in conducting a special headcount in the two states because of the current public scepticism on the figure released by the NPC.

He advised the government to embrace the proposal because of the strong public belief in the claim by the international community that Lagos was among the most populous countries in the world.
